Nikola Jokic, Nuggets outlast Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves in thriller

The final game of the NBA Christmas Day slate was the best. The host Denver Nuggets outlasted the Minnesota Timberwolves 142-138 in overtime, thanks to another brilliant performance by Nikola Jokic.

The three-time MVP scored 56 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and dished out 15 assists. Jamal Murray added 35 points for Denver.

Their efforts helped Denver overcome another superstar performance from Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards. The No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft forced overtime with a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds to go and finished with 44 points. He was ejected in overtime, however, with 20.5 seconds remaining.

Julius Randle pitched in 32 points and Jaden McDaniels had 21 for Minnesota.

Nuggets lose Cameron Johnson for 4-6 weeks

The Denver Nuggets will be without one of their best players, forward Cameron Johnson, for the next 4-6 weeks after the former Brooklyn Net suffered a bone bruise and a hyperextended right knee during a loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 23.

Johnson’s injury adds another name to an increasingly long list of Denver starters sidelined with injuries. Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun have each been out since November.

Johnson was averaging 11.7 points per game and over 30 minutes played for the Nuggets before going down with the injury.
