NFL QB having huge year reacts to former coach being fired by Giants

Daniel Jones has led the Indianapolis Colts to an 8-2 record in 2025 after being released by the New York Giants.
Jones’ former team, the Giants, fired head coach Brian Daboll following a 2-8 start to their season.
The quarterback expressed sympathy for Daboll, with whom he made the playoffs in 2022.

Daniel Jones’ flight home from Germany was the opposite of the one he took a year ago with the New York Giants.

In 2024, the Giants left Germany 2-8 after losing to the Carolina Panthers. It was Jones’ last game as a starter for the organization, which subsequently released him.

Jones has since landed on his feet and then some. As the Indianapolis Colts’ starter in 2025, he’s 8-2 and his team sits in first place in the AFC South and tied with the Denver Broncos for the best record in the NFL; the Colts defeated the Atlanta Falcons in overtime, 31-25, on Nov. 9 in Berlin.

Before Jones sat down with USA TODAY Sports thanks to his partnership with FedEx on Nov. 10, the Giants fired his former coach, Brian Daboll. Jones sympathized with Daboll.

‘Yeah, I just kind of heard about it recently,’ he said. ‘Obviously you never want to see anyone fired. It’s an unfortunate part of this business. So yeah, I think that’s the reaction. Hope the best for him and everybody there in New York.’

Jones and Daboll went to the playoffs together in 2022, Daboll’s first season in New York. Jones signed a four-year contract extension the following offseason, but inconsistent play and injuries spelled the end of his time with ‘Big Blue.’

General manager Joe Schoen will lead the Giants’ search for its next head coach, the team said, with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka taking over in the interim.
