Jalisco violence causes Chivas-America Femenil match to be postponed

The Liga MX Femenil match between Chivas and Club América on Sunday, Feb. 22 was rescheduled amid violence across the state of Jalisco.

On Sunday morning, Mexico’s military conducted an operation that killed Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The operation set off a series of violent events across Jalisco, whose capital is Guadalajara.

The Clásico Nacional Femenil was set to take place at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, but Liga MX released a statement just hours before the scheduled 5 p.m. local kickoff time.

‘Liga BBVA MX Femenil informs that the match corresponding to Matchday 10 of the Clausura 2026 Tournament, scheduled to be played today at 5 p.m. at Akron Stadium between Guadalajara and América, will be rescheduled. The new date and time will be confirmed shortly.’

Amid the violence, the U.S. State Department issued a shelter-in-place warning for U.S. citizens in Jalisco State (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (including Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State.

The State Department said the order was due to ‘security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity.’

Oseguera was one of the most wanted men in Mexico. American authorities had offered a bounty of up to $15 million for information leading to his arrest, according to CNN.

The violence will spark concerns ahead of the World Cup, during which Guadalajara will host four matches.

Estadio Akron will host Mexico’s group stage match against South Korea on June 18, as well as Spain’s high-profile clash with Uruguay on June 26.
