Colorado’s Deion Sanders talks NFL job rumors: ‘I’m happy where I am’

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is one of college football’s most popular head coaches.

Because of that, plus the impressive season that the 18th-ranked Buffaloes are currently having, Sanders’ name has been linked to several head coaching jobs in the NFL — specifically, with one of his former teams: the Dallas Cowboys.

During his news conference on Tuesday, Sanders was once again asked about the rumors. He shut them down by saying he loves being in Colorado, and leading the Buffaloes.

‘I’m happy where I am, man,’ Sanders said. ‘I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? … That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.’

He added: ‘We ain’t going nowhere. We’re about to get comfortable.’

Though the Cowboys job hasn’t opened up yet (Mike McCarthy is still in charge of the sidelines in Dallas), those in NFL circles have wondered aloud whether Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will make a change after the season. This has created the conversation on whether Sanders would entertain taking the job, should it open and be offered to him.

Sanders’ comments Tuesday also come a few days after The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported any talk of Sanders leaving Colorado for Dallas is ‘chitchat.’

Earlier Tuesday, Sanders’ former Cowboys teammate Michael Irvin appeared on Fox Sports’ ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd,’ where he said he believes Sanders would take the Cowboys job — if Dallas drafted Shedeur Sanders.

In USA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz’s latest NFL mock draft last week, the Buffaloes’ quarterback was projected to go No. 2 overall to the New York Giants. Dallas currently owns the No. 9 pick in this year’s NFL draft at 3-7 overall.

‘I believe 100% and I can tell you, good sources have told me that,’ Irvin said Tuesday. ‘Great sources have told me that. That’s all I can say like that without violating anything else.’

In two seasons at Colorado, Deion Sanders has led the Buffaloes to a 12-10 overall record. This season, led by Shedeur Sanders and two-way star player Travis Hunter, Deion Sanders has helped Colorado become bowl-eligible for the first time in a non-COVID condensed season since 2016.
